Backstory (pre- ARR)Keimei originated from the quiet village of Sui no Sato under the surface of the Ruby Sea. His father, Takeo Obinata, was the head Samurai of the Royal Guardsmen for the Ruby Princess while his mother, Mizuki, was a wandering Astrologian who fell in love and ended her journey to raise her and Takeo’s child. Takeo had forbidden Mizuki to share her studies with her son, for he wanted him to focus on his swordsmanship and continue the family practice of being a samurai. However, his mother secretly taught him her studies through the way of children stories and lullabies every evening before he went to sleep. One such lullaby was the story of the princess from the moon and how she fell in love with a powerful swordsman who freed her from her curse.Unfortunately, his mother quickly grew ill and passed away one night, leaving Takeo and Keimei with a rift in their relationship. After a fierce argument, the child Keimei ran away to the surface and begged the moon princess to return his mother's spirit. Though this did not happen, instead he was greeted by a gentle star shower, staining parts of his hair white. He heard his mother's voice that evening and since then vowed to continue her studies, trying to breach the gap of understanding the world's Kami and the gates of Heaven above in hopes of bringing his mother back to the world of the living.Keimei returns to Sui no Sato after that night goes about his days still trying to grasp what he witnessed that evening. Every night he would sneak out of Sui no Sato to reach the surface. On one occasion he meets a young Xaela boy around his age named Taimoorkhan Orl (or Tai for short) who he quickly grows fond of and encounters again on several more night trips. However, after hearing about a catastrophic disaster on the surface within the Steppe, he never saw Tai again. On another visit to the surface, he witnesses a young boy being smuggled onto a boat. When he tries to introduce himself, the only word he hears in return is “Fate” before watching the ship drift away.As for his samurai training, he had not been successful in obtaining the strength needed for this style of combat. But with the later help after being reuinited with his childhood friend Yugiri for whom he encounters in Doma on one trip, he was able to turn his training around and learned the way of the shinobi behind his father's back. This is because Yugiri identified his talents not in his strengths but in his agility and dexterity. However, despite learning this combat style, he only chooses to use this art as a means of self-defense.Once he became an adult, he parted ways from his homeland and wandered the various lands, sharing with any traveler who would listen of his astrological studies while trying to obtain new information he had not yet discovered.(ARR-Stormblood)After making his way back to Othard several years later, he encounters a young Xaela man who was seen roaming lost in the districts of Shirogane. The man introduces himself as Phaet Allity and Keimei quickly becomes smitten with him. They agree to become travel companions and help each other through their various adventures. After some time, Keimei can’t help but start to fall for the man but chooses to keep his feelings hidden.Coincidentally, they stumble into Taimoorkhan who had grown into a hardened and jaded figure. Their joyous reunion is cut short when Tai tries to warn Keimei of the threat his companion Phaet brought. Keimei becomes hurt by his words and chooses to protect Phaet while distancing himself from Tai. This comes spiraling back at Keimei when he begins to learn the truth of Phaet’s past and identity, both of which was dark and painful. After the liberation of Doma, Keimei eventually hears word of a special treasure obtained by the Kojin tribe. A mirror said to be an item linked to a moon spirit. Keimei becomes obsessed with trying to learn more and after venturing forth to witness the mirror for himself, he hears that familiar voice once heard on the beach during the star shower so many years ago. He makes a trip back to Sui no Sato to confront his father of his discoveries. What he thought would be a happy meeting resulted in anger and discourse. Takeo told Keimei to give up his childish ways and demanded he returned home to fulfill his duties. With his heart shattered, Keimei steals his father’s sword that evening and returns to the Kojin tribe. His mind had snapped and, while in a trance, he defeated the Kojin guards and touches the mirror becoming possessed by the primal within. With the help of Phaet and Tai, he is brought back to his original state and spends the next few days recovering in peace within his childhood home. His father, now with a changed heart after almost losing his son, tells him the truth. His mother was once the vessel for the moon primal so many years ago until he approached her and saved her. This left her body weakened and they both knew one day Mizuki would pass on. Takeo took it upon himself to rid the mirror in the Ruby Sea in hopes no one would find it again. After the events that unfolded, Keimei accepts his mother’s death, and he would no longer pursue a means to bring her back. He realizes life’s fragility and, in this moment, confesses his love to Phaet and tells him he would continue to stay by his side.(Shadowbringers-present)Keimei begins to doubt his own abilities in protecting his loved ones, including Phaet. During a difficult battle encounter in Werlyt against the Diamond weapon, Keimei’s mind is transcended to a place frozen in time. Unlike his visions in the past, this time he is met face to face with the weaponized Primal Alexander where he receives a Gunblade. He is brought back to his current realm with a heavy heart after the events. He continues to feel inadequate in his ability to protect his loved ones and ventures forth to lean to hone his new weapon. However, with his mind continuing to be clouded in doubt, he encounters a difficult battle on the frozen plains of Garlemald until he meets a wandering Xaela knight who rescues him. The man introduces himself as Aleksi Feldrawn and convinces Keimei he needed to learn the ability to defend rather than to aid those after an attack has occurred. Keimei is reluctant at first believing he was not capable of such feats until seeing the devastation around him made him realize he could no longer standby and let others be slaughtered. He begins to feel guilty of his peaceful life in where he was given the privilege of living in shelter within Sui no Sato while others on the outside were being tortured and slaughtered. He thinks of Tai and Phaet, both children affected by warfare and Garlean onslaughts. He vows to use his new weapon to protect those who can’t protect themselves and trains under Aleksi until he lands on the shores of Old Sharlayan and is reunited with his love Phaet.
